Innovation Mission to Italy: Manure Processing and Value-Added Utilization
RVO (Netherlands Enterprise Agency) is organizing a knowledge and technology innovation mission to northern Italy from May 19 through May 21, 2025.
Who is it for?
This mission is of interest if you are working on innovative solutions related to the processing and value-added use of animal manure, such as: anaerobic digestion, emission reduction, and the recovery of nutrients and biomaterials. The mission will take you to Northern Italy. This region is known for its efficient and modern livestock farming and crop production. The innovation mission is therefore of interest to Dutch companies and research institutions active in making agriculture more sustainable. This could lead to various solutions that reduce emissions in livestock farming or field crop production:
- biogas production from animal manure and local energy supply (cogeneration)
- Separation and pretreatment of manure (prior to the fermentation process)
- manure robots
- nitrogen strippers
- Measuring instruments for livestock farming (emissions monitoring)
- production of biomaterials (such as building materials)

Program
The mission program is currently being developed. We are striving to incorporate the specific wishes of the participants as much as possible when finalizing the program. The main components of the three-day program are:
- Explanations by experts and authorities on the situation in Northern Italy, specifically Lombardy;
- visits to Italian companies;
- visits to the innovation ecosystem, national and regional research institutes (CREA, CRPA, ERSAF), universities (Brescia), and agricultural organizations (e.g., Confagricultura);
- company visits to livestock farmers and biogas producers;
- networking event (plus a possible seminar).
Costs
The cost of participating in the innovation mission is €250 per person. This includes: participation in the group program, transportation to and from program events, and lunch and dinner as indicated in the program. Participation does not include: travel and accommodation expenses, or any individual expenses.
