Foot-and-mouth disease infection Germany

On Friday, Jan. 10, foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) was found on a buffalo farm in the German state of Brandenburg. Besides the infected farm in Hönow, no other FMD infections or suspicions are known. But with the 2001 FMD outbreak in mind, alertness is called for.

Situation in the Netherlands

Urgent advice is given to all sectors with FMD-susceptible animals (cattle, pigs, small ruminants) and farmyard operators to take precautions that minimize the risk of introduction and spread.

In addition to the calf farms previously identified, the NVWA has identified 4 cattle farms where a total of 6 cattle have been brought in from Brandenburg since Dec. 1, 2024. Additionally, 1 sheep farm was identified as having imported 125 sheep from Brandenburg. These farms have been blocked and are under investigation by the NVWA. It is expected that all identified farms that have landed animals from Brandenburg will have been visited and animals sampled by the end of the week. All samples examined so far have tested negative. Thus, there are no indications yet that animals with FMD are present in the Netherlands.
