Dutch companies are exploring the French market for autonomous and data-driven agriculture

Fedecom and FME are joining forces to tap into the growing French market for autonomous agricultural technology

The Netherlands has a strong international reputation in the fields of precision agriculture, robotization, and sustainable food production. Through the project “From Promise to Practice: Autonomous Data-Driven Agriculture,” FME and Fedecom are now joining forces to translate this technological edge into concrete market success in France—Europe’s largest agrotechnology market.

A unique public-private initiative

FME and Fedecom are joint lead applicants for a so-called “Market Theme Priority” grant. This makes targeted funding available to Dutch companies that wish to explore the French market. The focus is on autonomous agrotechnology, with opportunities in areas such as harvesting robots, precision fertilization, and weed control.

Together with organizations including RVO, the Dutch Embassy in France, the Ministry of Agriculture, WUR, the regional development agencies (ROMs), and a growing group of companies, efforts are underway to develop a broadly supported approach.

Strong interest from the business community

During an exploratory meeting at Fedecom in Nieuwegein on January 21, it quickly became clear that the business community is enthusiastic. Twenty companies are now involved, and this number is expected to rise to more than fifty. These include startups, scale-ups, SMEs, and larger players who together see opportunities for market exploration, innovation, demonstrations, and commercial collaboration.

France as a Growth Market

Labor shortages and the need for sustainability are driving growing demand for autonomous solutions in France. Regions such as Toulouse and Angers have been strategically selected for further market exploration. The organization is also collaborating with French agricultural organizations such as the CUMAs and plans to participate in trade shows such as FIRA and SIVAL.

Roadmap to Success

The project involves developing a roadmap for market introduction, in which technology, knowledge sharing, demonstration projects, and export ambitions go hand in hand. It also focuses on knowledge commercialization through collaboration between Dutch research institutions (such as WUR and TU Delft) and French innovation partners (such as RobAgri). This aligns with the Innovation Pact between the Netherlands and France, which was signed in 2023.

Goal: 400 million euros in annual exports

The future potential is significant. The global market for autonomous agricultural robots is growing rapidly. For the Netherlands, a 20% market share in France is considered achievable. In the long term, this could lead to annual export revenue of as much as 400 million euros.

Public-private partnerships are crucial in this regard. Support from government agencies helps companies mitigate risks, leverage networks, and accelerate the transition from concept to reality.
